SISTERS SO BUSY AS THEIR BUSINESS REALLY BLOOMS

SISTERS, business partners and florists Alex O'Halloran, 42, and Danielle Fraser, 37, have gone from strength to strength since starting up Moss Industry in Barwon Heads five years ago.

In April, their business was one of the only 10 invited to create a display at the Melbourne Flower Show.

And with Mother's Day just gone, it would be time for the girls to stop and draw breath - if only they weren't so busy.

"We were frantic then - I can still hardly move, "Mrs O'Halloran said. "People pre-ordered flowers and then we did get a lot of walk-ins - it's mainly men who do that"

Moss Industry flowers is not your traditional florist, according to Mrs O'Halloran, with foliage playing a huge role in the arrangements they create.

"We use lots of unusual foliage," she said. "Really natural things you might see in gardens, but not necessarily think of picking, such as chili, khale, which is a part of the cabbage family. We use figs, pivot berry and fresh fruit, maybe some branches with lemons on. There are no rules".

Mrs.O'Halloran added that they did do traditionally structured floristry. "You need to have things for people who are more conservative because not everyone is going to take to something that is too unusual," she said.

Moss Industry Flowers also stocks homewares, including bags, artificial, candelabras and lamps.

Danielle's handmade lotus flower pod featuring skeleton leaves to create petals.

Danielle of Moss Industry florist was thrilled when she was contacted by the Victorian Farmers Federation and invited to exhibit at the International Melbourne Flower & Garden Show 2010.

10 of Melbourne's leading florist were asked to create a stand that would show people that the floristry industry is a truly creative profession.

The organisers thought it was time to inject fresh talent to the exhibition.

It was the first time florists had the opportunity to express themselves as florists and artists.

During the weeks leading up to the show, Danielle experimented with mock ups of each flower design and sketched what she visualised her creation to be when finally finished. She wanted to create a forest for the eyes........something that would symbolise what nature has left behind for us to admire.Everything was to be made by hand!

Large trunks of silverbirch were used to suspend handmade dramatic flowers from paper bark, enormous lotus pods with delicate skeleton leaves she called her 'Avatar flowers' and whimsical bird cages with little paper bark birds inside.

Our background wall was truly enormous and took us 8 hours to paint.We were covered in black paint and and really relieved when it was finished.

Moss Industry Florist won business of the week on the 3AW breakfast show! I was thrilled to receive a phone call from 3aw radio station today to be told that I was this weeks business winner of the breakfast competition.A prize worth $200 of Cricketers Arms beers. Great for over summer!

I have been a dedicated listener to 3AW for years now and rarely miss a morning of the Ross & John show which goes on air between 5.30am - 8.300am - Monday to Friday.

I have a huge 'voice & humour 'crush on Ross and would love to meet him one day just because his sharp wit appeals to me so much!

Before settling down on the coast I used to work in radio so I should know better, but I just can't help admitting that I'm clearly a Ross groupie...........

Christmas Day 1979, Mackay Queensland Christmas Day lunch at the Turnbull residence.
Our first and only Christmas in Mackay Queensland 1979. Normally a day of chaos with presents bursting under the tree,cousins, Aunties & Uncles, Grandparents too........... we celebrated our small but very special Christmas Day with just Mum and Dad. Later in the day - the highlight was throwing the frisbie, Playing 'Grease'on the turntable, a backyard game of cricket with my new cricket set and 'The Wizard of Oz' on tv.
No matter how long ago - the day with just the 4 of us holds great memories.

On leaving Mackay after 1 year, we returned to Melbourne - The next Christmas was so different again.........................

With wedding season here in full swing, I thought I'd share some snaps from my own wedding in Noosa.

We decided on a cocktail party at my Dad's property in Noosa Heads where family and close friends came to celebrate. It was an amazing day!

My bouquet was made up of honeymoon roses. In this shot the roses appear to be light pink in colour, but in the flesh they are a pale coffee or latte colour which I thought was perfect for the soft pearly grey tones of my dress. My dress is Grecian in style by designer Wayne Cooper

This is a view of the early morning sun on VALENTINES DAY from my decking.It was the first thing I saw before our busy day began at Moss Industry. It was that eerie smokey sky and smell that instantly reminded to me of the distaster that took place last week on Black Saturday. Not even the ocean breeze on the coast where we live could make it disappear.

As our contribution to the Bushfire Appeal, Moss Industry will be donating $1 per single stemmed rose sold on Valentines Day.

We would also like to say how shocked and sad we were to hear of the loss of Danny Shepherd from Ocean Grove Victoria,who lost his life helping his parents save their home from the fires on

Black Saturday.

To his beautiful wife Bree Shepherd, who recently married Danny in November 2008, our hearts go out to you at this incredibly sad time.

At Moss Industry poppies have 4 wonderful stages.

The first when their bud case are tightly shut ready to slowly flip open when they feel like waking up. The second stage is the amazing burst of unpredictable colour as seen in these photos.The third stage is the the joy we get from admiring them as they are placed in a gorgeous vase in our home and the last stage is the tiny little pod that remains.

Penny was a stunning bride who I enjoyed working with immensely! Her ideas and superb taste made my job as her florist an absolute dream. I personally loved every detail of her wedding flowers that she selected.The creamy gardenias and dusty miller foliage in Penny's bouquet were perfect.She also sourced beautiful ribbon from her travels to New York.It featured soft greys,off whites,charcoals and black ,which was used to wrap her bouquet stems. Stunning!
